Fishing – A Beginners Glossary Part 1

Edit Article |

The basic concept of fishing is fairly basic and self explanatory. Fishing is the act of catching fish. Or my particular favourite dictionary definition for fishing is, “the diversion of catching fish!”  I am not sure whether they mean a diversion for the angler from their regular day to day life or the act of diverting the fish onto the hook or into a net!

As with any transaction there are usually two parties involved. In this case we have the fisherman or fisherwoman as the “fish-er” and the fish, would logically, to me at least, be the “fish-ee”.

What about some of the terms we hear regarding fishing though? To the uninitiated it can sound like a load of old trout!

Ok here is a really easy one to kick off with:

1. Fish type/species followed by the word “fishing”- For example, carp, bass or trout and the word fishing, e.g. carp fishing. This really is as simple as it sounds. Fishing for a particular species of fish which in this case is carp.

2. Fishing Tackle – This is not some illegal challenge in football or soccer but in fact the equipment that is used for fishing. There is a large variety of fishing tackle available and much of it can be specialised, e.g. carp fishing tackle. Yes you guessed it, the fishing tackle used to try and catch carp.

3. Coarse Fishing – This is not fishing on a golf course (notice the subtle spelling difference) or any kind of course for that matter. It is in fact the name given to fishing (usually in the United Kingdom) for freshwater fish that are not considered game fish which are trout, salmon and char. Once again, carp is a common target for coarse fishers.

4. Fly Fishing – Fishing whilst flying would be really difficult and probably very dangerous, so that’s not what this is. Fly fishing is actually fishing with a very special kind of bait, an artificial fly. Yes a fake fly! The fishers use all kinds of fake fly, different sizes, different colours and the aim is to lure the fish with this unique bait.

5. Fishing Bait – Theoretically you could fish without much of the modern fishing tackle as I am sure they did in ages past, with just a sharp spear and an even sharper aim! However, whoever first came up with the idea of luring the fish with some kind of bait was clearly a genius. Fishing is now much easier than it ever was, with all kinds of bait available for all kinds of different fish and different fishing conditions.

This concludes part one of our “Beginners Fishing Glossary”. Tune in soon for part 2, when we will have a look at Sea Fishing, Bass Fishing and perhaps even the legend that is J R Hartley.

What You Need to Know about Carp Fishing Bait

What You Need to Know about Carp Fishing Bait

What You Need to Know about Carp Fishing Bait The range and variety of baits that can be used will soon become apparent to any carp fisherman irrespective of his experience. You won’t be surprised to learn that some kinds of bait are more successful than others. This stands to reason when you consider that a real live fish is going to be coming towards your bait to see whether it is worth taking a bite or not!

Getting prepared for a successful fishing trip.

If this is a new pastime for you, you will need to buy carp fishing tackle as well as purchasing your bait. The best way to make sure you have everything you need is to consult a good website or read a carp-fishing magazine. This will give you access to lots of carp fishing advice that will increase the chances of your first trip being a success.

As well as the obvious need for comfort and essential supplies you will also need one vital essential: bait.

How can you find out more about the bait?

Exploring the market is the most effective method. Not all fishermen will agree as to the most suitable bait and method of fishing. You are likely to make your own personal choice. Undeniably, though, some baits are manifestly more successful than others. A popular choice amongst fisherman is the use of boilies. There are few more popular baits available on today’s market. The most effective bait, according to most fishermen, are boilies.

As a consequence you could easily make a trip to the nearest stockist and buy some. You can also purchase carp fishing bait and tackle online. You’ll be amazed to discover the enormous variety of boilies available within this one section. People have different ideas as to which ones are best. The most effective flavours from the hundreds that are available will be found only by trying out lots of different ones.

What, if any, other types of carp fishing baits are available?

You only need to visit an online carp fishing tackle and bait shop to know the answer is a resounding yes!. An example is the use of live bait. Some pellets have bloodworm in them which dissolves when you put them into the water. This will attract the carp as it is a normal part of their diet.

If you are very new to carp fishing you may want to go for one of the most popular forms of carp fishing bait: maize. The cheapness and availability of maize makes this a popular choice amongst beginners. It’s also an easy choice because it’s basic and doesn’t come in a range of flavours. You must however soak and boil it properly if you are going to use it to attract the carp, otherwise you could harm the fish as it will swell inside them and cause damage – sometimes irreparable.

So, you are not limited in your choice of carp bait. No matter how experienced you are as a fisherman you will go out and fish with increased confidence as you know more about these different types of bait!

A guide to choosing carp fishing tackle

Carp fishing is one of the most popular forms of freshwater fishing. Carp fishing combines the excitement of fishing in a freshwater arena with the potential to catch sizable fish. For those who are entertaining the idea of fishing and are looking to catch the big one, carp fishing may be exactly what you are looking for. However, before embarking on your fishing journey, you should be aware that there are a few items to take along. These items will ensure the fisherman or woman a fun filled trip without headaches and stress.

Carp Rods and Reels

Due to their aggressive manner and sheer size you will need a sturdy rod  for carp fishing. The rod should be between eight to twelve feet long and have the ability to handle large game. Medium to heavy action rods are best – you’ll find this designation is listed near the grip of the rod. The reel needs to also be able to hold at least 150 meters of 6 kilogram test line. This is about the smallest gauge line that one should have on a carp reel. Carp can grow over thirty or even forty pounds and sharp rocks or bottom structure can easily snap off larger fish. The reel should also be of medium size. This not only ensures that the reel can hold the proper gauge of line but can reel the fish in as well. Although gear ratio and retrieve are not entirely important, one should always have a reel with at least a 4:1 gear ratio.

Accessories

Because carp are such large fish, it is vital to use a net when bringing landing them. A net should be of a decent size and as a rule of thumb should have a depth at least the same as the diameter. Along with a good net, one should also carry needle nose pliers. These pliers will allow the angler to release a hook that has been partially digested without too much damage to the fish.

Because carp are not generally taken for food, most carp should be released quickly so that they will live.

A wide variety of baits are used when fishing for carp. One of the cheapest and most readily available forms of bait is corn from a can. Canned corn can be found at any supermarket – it’is cheap and makes great bait for carp. Anything from chicken livers, hot dogs, and breads that will stay on a hook can be used to catch carp.

For fishing for filter feeding varieties, use circle hooks. These will keep the fish from deep hooking itself as they allow the carp to digest the bait –  the hook will not attach itself until it brushes against the lip of the carp.

In the 19th century, angling hobbyists divided all the species of fish into two groups. While the terms continue to be used today, the exclusionary attitude has fallen by the wayside.

Carp Tackle :: Bait Boats

I was sat on the bank enjoying a days carp fishing. The weather was good, the water was calm and the bite count was quite productive.

The pond is located in a large private, well hidden area. There are generous coverings of lily pads and other greenery.

About 4 hours into the day, a chap had arrived on the opposite bank. After tackling up and before he cast for the first time, I saw him put what looked like a remote controlled boat.

My first thoughts were ‘How can he think of playing with a remote controlled boat when fishing?’ I was thinking how I could show my objections when he put this boat into the water. He steered it over the area he was about to fish. The boat was very quiet, much quieter than the standard remote controlled boat. It was at that point I realised he must be baiting the fishing area using this device.

I’ve never come across this technique before and was intrigued. I walked around to investigate and I was impressed. It was a bait boat. You stock 2 channels in the top with bait. When you’ve taken the boat to the area you intend to fish, you simply open 2 flaps on the boat which releases the bait into the water.

Simple and marvellous idea. I am thinking of adding this to my collection of carp tackle, although initially I was concerned about the noise level and vibrations, but, after speaking to a few people who uses these, they can be a very useful device.
