Fishing Clothing Review: TFG Eskimo Second Skin Trousers And Top

Edit Article |

Posted: Nov 11, 2010 |

It’s November as I sit here writing this and I’ve just got back from a quick fishing session in the first real chill of the winter. Crikey, it was cold when I got up!

As I slipped on my thermal fishing gear, it dawned on me that I’d owned the TF Gear Eskimo Second Skin trousers and top for quite some time, and I vowed to dig out my original review of them when I got home.

The piece below was written in January 2008 about some thermal clothing that I first got my hands on in 2007. It’s 2010 now, so I’ve had these items for nearly four years. As an ‘outdoor’ type person, my outdoor gear gets worn a lot. The fact that they have lasted so long is a real testament to the quality of them.

Here’s the original review (January, 2008):
*****
DON’T WORRY – I’m not about to subject you to the sight of a tubby bloke in skin tight leggings. This is a family fishing website and I don’t want to be responsible for mass-vomiting on keyboards. I’ll stick with a catalogue shot and let your imagination do the rest!

I’ve mentioned in previous reviews that I often use items designed for anglers in other areas of my life. I’ve also mentioned before that I own a dog. Therefore, I’ll bore you all again by saying that I’m a dog-owning angler who uses some of his fishing gear for other purposes….and that the Eskimo Second Skin Trousers from the Matt Hayes Total Fishing Gear (TFG) range are one of those items!

These black thermal under-trousers cling to the skin, keeping a very small warm layer of air close to the skin. In a way, they look and work a little bit like a wetsuit, but without the water! They’re also made of a lot more comfortable material and are easy to get on and off! I’ll post the technical details below this review, as posting them here would make it look like I’d performed loads of scientific tests and research, which I haven’t done. Instead, I’ve worn these trousers a LOT and am speaking from my own experience.

As soon as you put the TFG Eskimo Second Skin Trousers on, you feel warm. You look a bit like a wannabe Ninja, but this is soon resolved by putting your normal trousers on over the top. Once that’s done, you can forget about them.

I’ve worn these trousers in extremely cold conditions for over a year now and have never felt that my legs are cold in them. They do exactly what they’re supposed to do and have survived numerous trips to the washing machine.

When overnight carp fishing, they are great to wear in your sleeping bag. Coupled with the TFG Eskimo Second Skin top, they’re a perfect combination at night. I have to say that, although I own a top and use it on occasion (especially at night), I haven’t needed it so much during the day, as most of my windproof fleeces and other tops provide adequate warmth. It’s hand to have at hand, though, as it really does provide instant warmth.

Both the Eskimo trousers and top take up very little room. They’re almost like underwear in design, so are well worth having tucked away in your rucksack if you’re doing a long session. If you’re a day angler, I’d certainly recommend the trousers. The top would be handy if you prefer mobility – you won’t need to wear the number of layers that I usually wear when fishing!

I’ve worn the TFG Eskimo Second Skin trousers and top not just when out carp fishing and when walking the dog, but also when fishing from beaches and out on a boat. Trust me, those conditions can be a lot more demanding than when fishing inshore and these products have never let me down.

The RRP of both the top and trousers is £24.95. However, at the time of writing, TackleBargains have them at just £12.24 each.

Elton Murphy, AnglersNet.co.uk – January, 2008

*****

I’ve just checked and, nearly four years on, you can still get these at the prices quoted above, along with a lot of other quality thermal stuff. Try this link to see a lot of thermal fishing clothing in the UK:

http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/prices/thermals

Even if you are reading this outside the UK and can’t afford to get stuff shipped to your home country from the UK, I’d advise you to find something similar locally. Being warm when fishing makes you a happier angler, and a happy angler is usually a better angler!

Tight lines,

Elton

How To Make Chocolate Malt Carp Fishing Boilies For Winter And Spring Success!

Edit Article |

Posted: Feb 17, 2011 |

Revealed here are very unusual powerful bait recipes for winter, spring and cold water big fish success! Chocolate malt is a popular flavour now. I have made my own versions of these baits and flavours as homemade baits for about 25 years. That is a lot of winters and springs to test what truly works so read on and reap more cold water rewards now!

Flavours are an exceptionally popular topic of interest among anglers on the bank! Chocolate malt is a flavour that I and friends of mine plus many other anglers in the know love to exploit! Many anglers today use chocolate malt flavour readymade baits, but you can make even more potent versions! If you have read any other of my hundreds of bait secrets articles all over the web now, you will have realized that bait and nutrition, and bait and achieving far more bites are certainly not necessarily the same thing! Nutritional baits catch fish sure, but baits optimized to achieve the maximum numbers of chances of bites are far more successful!

What I mean by this is that nutritional stimulation is merely one avenue or approach to exploit within baits in order to achieve a situation where fish mouth your baits and subsequently get hooked! A great many baits that have exploited chocolate malt flavour over the years have not been designed as nutritionally stimulating baits at all! Instead the vast majority of chocolate malt readymade baits have relied upon the impacts of the high levels of flavour within relatively low nutritional value under optimized base mixes.

Protein components just keep on getting more and more expensive. So the aim of bait companies to achieve more profits leads many to cut down on protein and use alternative options to achieve bites and of course utilizing high flavour levels is just one approach that has great success! These days more and more bait companies are competing so are looking at ways to incorporate competitive edges within their baits at low cost. Some ideas below will cover some ideas as many of these substances mentioned cost less than using protein rich additives and ingredients.

The success of your bait certainly does not have to be due to how rich the concentrated proteins within your baits are in terms of feeding triggers and attractors; endless other options are available that truly work, even when fished against protein rich baits!

The original successful chocolate malt flavour that came to prominence was the one conceived by Rod Hutchinson, the flavour supreme extraordinaire! This was the chocolate malt flavour I chose if I was thinking about a bait of this particular emphasis, but the homemade base mixes I used were very open texture because I wished my flavours to leach out in great concentration and catch me fish as efficiently as possible! For winter I used various very soluble additives and ingredients to assist in the leaching of attractors and feeding stimulants alongside the concentrated flavour.

An example of this would be malt extract, which is a highly under used additive these days. Another additive I would use today in such a bait is vanilla extract meal. Personally I like to keep things different but certainly not just for the sake of it. For instance today if I was to fish against a readymade chocolate malt bait there are very many options I would exploit to design a vast array of competitive edges into my homemade baits. These edges very much would relate to the potency of the bait, its instant and cumulative bioactive effects and metabolic effects and this will include potent prebiotic and probiotic effects, things that will speed the throughput of bait through fish, assist digestion, increase bait palatability and impacts intensity and duration and so on.

For cold water the ways you bait substances in combination react in water are a massively crucial part of your bait! Cold water baits are well known to be more successful when you include an intense sweetener. Such a sweetener has multiple effects and impacts apart from its role as a flavour enhancer. Such sweeteners strengthen the intensity and duration of other flavours and improve bait palatability which in turn encourages carp to feed on more bait more repeatedly, even in low water temperatures. Obviously further repeated feeding equals more chances for fish to make mistakes on your hook baits!

As the focus of this article is on the flavour not base mix just a couple of suggestions will be mentioned in this regard. It is desirable to give your fish multiple impacts on multiple senses so utilizing various substances combined is obviously a very sound suggestion. So for example I would use a sweet or milky or another type of powdered palatant in my bait. I might use a very specific appetite stimulator and the profile of these can very enormously. SBS baits for example have a very well proven range.

Appetite stimulators are extremely under exploited simply because the masses have not figured it out that a bait built on a range of incredibly potent feeding triggers which also happen to be seriously potent enhancers is a very serious edge over fish caution and resistance to being hooked! They really do promote that vital just one more effect when experienced by carp!

As for flavours I like to make things unique in my baits while ensuring plenty to attract carp and create interesting profiles and richness within baits and substances leaching off. If you are fishing a water where chocolate malt has been used previously then why not create new flavour with a unique profile and effects. You might well consider trying mixing 2 different brands of chocolate malt flavours together, with each on a different base.

You might decide to add a different dimension perhaps, by adding a butter or cream or scopex or milk flavour. Personally I would add a little butyric acid also. In a chocolate malt bait you might include extras into you bait that will certainly enhance the palatability and solubility and effectiveness of your bait. Many malted drinks are very effective and include milk protein and sugar fractions and further enhancers such as salts. These tend to be very fine which is great but they have a certain oil content so I would mix something else to it that is also fine; such as icing sugar to it for cold water use.

I would include a milliliter of Thaumatin (the trade name is Talin) at least per 1 kilogram of your dry powder base mix. Other things I would add in whatever combination of ingredients and additives you might choose for your base mix I would include are molasses meal, betaine HCL and also in with your liquids, some high potency liquid lecithins from CW Baits.

Vanilla is probably the most popular flavour in the world yet it is strangely ignored by 99 percent of carp anglers today. The real vanilla extract liquid is very useful indeed but often in pretty weak alcohol base. Alcohol is a very soluble easily dissipated form of solvent and carrier for natural flavour components. However it is possible to create real vanilla flavour by steeping and heating vanilla pods to draw out their awesomely attractive oleoresins.

Traditionally chocolate, vanilla and chilli are well connected for many reasons through history and culture and with very good reason. In fact a few drops of capsicum essential oil for example works very well in a sweet homemade chocolate malt bait! For more information on what kinds of substances are most potent in designing your base mix for cold water boilies, pellets, particles, ground baits and so on read on.

You might think that chocolate malt just refers to boilies, but it most certainly does not! What about chocolate malt sweetcorn, or tiger nuts or luncheon meat, or spod mix or PVA bag mix, method mix or boosted paste? How about this little idea: Defrost some prawns in a mixture of soluble fish protein, vanilla extract powder, betaine HCL, raw molasses, wheat bran, powdered palatant and other appetite stimulators and chocolate malt flavour. When you begin, add some dehydrated prawns and maybe insect meal, a little chocolate powder and instant coffee powder, silkworms crushed plus some chopped up vanilla pod.

When your prawns have defrosted and all materials have soaked in all together, crush up your prawns and then add some PVA friendly liquid food. Examples could include CC Moore corn sweet syrup, plus a little liquid chilli extract and added chilli flakes. Maybe you might try liquid salmon and krill extract with added glycerine, Butyric acid and Talin. Such suggestions are all good, but merely the tip of the iceberg of what I know is possible and certainly baits can be made incredibly far more potent!

I really seriously rate using big PVA bags filled with suggestions like this. I make mine to pack such a uniquely potent punch I can tell you it makes me smile knowing just what is hitting fish externally and internally in concentration is actively altering their brain chemistry, muscular state, changes of behaviours and states of arousal and feeding modes!

I do not simply go to bait companies for my ideas and materials though. Herbalists and suppliers to the massage and holistic healing and health food type businesses offer many extraordinarily potent substances that could well be new to your consciousness as having potential in carp baits!

You might think that chocolate malt just refers to boilies, but it most certainly does not! I could suggest trying betal nut products, and endless other products to induce special energizing impacts in feed to induce boosted feeding activity especially required in low water temperatures!

Examples could include CC Moore corn sweet syrup, plus a little liquid chilli extract and added chilli flakes. Maybe you might try the new liquid krill extract and add glycerine, Butyric acid and Talin for an awesome unique spring chocolate bait!

I say much more about this on CC Moore TV each month as a consultant describing how and why to use a massive diversity of various substances to trigger feeding in many potent ways and also gain incredible competitive edges over competing baits!

This is all great stuff but this is merely the tips of the iceberg of what is possible and certainly can be made incredibly more potent. It really does pay to keep an open mind! Homemade Carp Fishing Bait Recipes Using Pineapple Flavours And Readymade Boilies!

Homemade Carp Fishing Bait Recipes Using Pineapple Flavours And Readymade Boilies!

You will be the first to ever have access to these new unique pineapple recipes and unique fishing method; so I suggest you use them as soon as possible on your next trip! I highly recommend that you use them (or even play around with them,) and exploit them as much as possible to fool those big wary fish you always dreamt of catching! Read on for far more information now!

What is this mysterious innovative method you might well ask? (and one of very many I might add) that you can use to very great effect! Going straight into it then, what you do is put your bait actually on your hook, and up the line so the first thing that goes into the mouth of your carp is not your bait but your hook. What you do is tie your hook on hook link material and then slide a big pineapple pop up boilie or pellet up the line so it sits on the eye of your hook, but so your line and hook form an elbow as in the old bent hook or shaped heated tubing types of line aligner etc types of rigs with an angle at the eye or above it.

Now you trim all the exterior surface of your big pop up bait off and shape your bait so it looks like a thin slug sitting on your hook and line which is about 5 millimeters wide by around 2 centimeters long. Next you tie on 5 millimeters by approximately 25 centimeter long strips of Japanese Sushi Nori onto your line starting above your hook and winding down over your pop up bait slug going down onto the hook then back up and around your pop up bait. Use some elasticated cotton or small elastic rings to hold the Sushi Nori onto your bait, line and hook.

You may add extra small strips onto the back of the bend of the hook. Make up a number of rigs like this. Now to prepare your liquid dip or glug; note that these are creative ideas so do play around with them OK!

Try mixing together 3 different pineapple flavours from different companies; you will benefit from many things by doing this.

Boost the attraction of you pineapple flavours by adding 2 milliliters of butyric acid to each 10 milliliters of mixed flavours. Mix this little lot with 1 milliliter each of clove, geranium, and thyme essential oils from CC Moore. You might want to go for a little glucose syrup, honey, molasses and a protein based intense sweetener also (each enhances many factors to great effect OK!)

Add betaine HCL from Carp fishing pellets or CW Baits in generous levels, plus a little sea salt, (mineral rich salt not table salt) for example, 1 level teaspoonful of each to 10 milliliters of your flavour and essential oils mixture.

You might well fancy adding some liquid kelp complex or Feedstim XP or enzyme treated liver etc. There is far more to this kind of preparation than I am saying here because you can make these things seriously addictive, extremely potently thermogenic, even possibly psychoactive exploiting phytotrophic substances etc in certain ways but that is for further reading – as you will see!

Make a mix of your favourite base mix into paste not using eggs, but including a little blood powder instead mixed with icing sugar. Simply add your powder to the flavours mixture described above. However please note, cut this particular mixture for this purpose with perhaps an equal amount of CC Moore liquid Super Slop, or their liquid shellfish extract, or their Feedstim XP or even simply use liquid molasses boosted with enzyme treated liver and Marmite for instance maybe with a fruit palatant enhancer.

Make your baits in different sizes in squares and air- dry them not heat them in any way at all. When you come to use them simply tip them into your PVA bag or funnel or whatever, and maybe pack out your bag with stick mix or any ground bait or homemade mixture of base mix materials to really potently trigger fish and pull them onto your hook baits.

You might for instance use soaked shrimps and silk worm pupae from CW Baits and even alternatives like dehydrated fruits like citrus peels and cranberries, mulberries and blueberries etc steeped in CC Moore liquid fruit enhancer and pineapple flavour etc. Inject your PVA bag last thing with a PVA friendly liquid food.

Examples ideal for winter and onwards include CC Moore corn steep liquor boosted even more with their corn steep liquor powder, maybe or their Liver Amino Compound for instance boosted even more with enzyme treated liver powder or maybe soluble fish protein for example, or maybe hydrolysed poultry protein etc. (For more examples and for unique ones you can make at home that will not melt PVA read on to find out more.)

I hope you can see how being creative like this will deliver far more potent feed triggering stimulation to the water column surrounding your fish! This is exceptionally important when water is cold and dense OK!

Remember that carp are most powerfully triggered by substances in enough concentrations in the water to change their brain chemistry and mood and activity so they will investigate and mouth your hook baits. That is about it as far as the job of baits is concerned.

I do want fish to remain as healthy and vitally balanced and energetic as possible for the good of their own health, but ultimately I want the most bites as possible in the shortest time span possible.

Just feeding fish with quality nutrition is very far from the complete answer to maximizing the number of bites you can achieve and where new and innovative bait secrets and substances really come into their own for you in achieving incredibly competitive edges! Revealed in my unique readymade bait and homemade bait carp and catfish bait secrets ebooks is far more powerful information look up my unique website (Baitbigfish) and see my biography below for details of my ebooks deals right now!

HOMEMADE CARP FISHING BAITS – Vital Secrets of Shrimp Paste and Readymade Boilies!

When you think about it there are many reasons why carp love shrimps – they are natural food for a start but how can you exploit shrimp in ways to present incredibly irresistible levels of naturally concentrated attraction in your homemade and readymade baits – to catch loads more fish?! Read on to find out much more!

When I got into carp baits much more around 1980 shrimp meal was a very popular ingredient. It seems that many people had not figured out the link with krill, or lobster or abalone etc for that matter, but shrimp was all the rage and was used in fish meal based baits mainly. But most of the carp anglers I spoke to about this either had no clue why shrimp was effective or had some kind of vague idea such as it has something to do with what it contains, like pigments, polysaccharides, salts and amino acids and the like. However what these did once inside a fish was certainly not a subject for discussion primarily because hardly anglers really knew. But this aspect of bait is absolutely worth its weight in gold and I have found out very much of this not that I will explain here, but I will provide for readers newer to baits a few useful ideas to boost the performance of their baits!

Belachan is a fermented shrimp paste made in parts of Asia for many culinary applications to massively improve taste and palatability of dishes among other things. This should be no surprise as it is has a high salts content. The CC Moore European product version in powdered form is also available apart from Belachan block. This Belechan style powder is an extremely useful additive indeed for boosting the levels and concentrations of feeding triggers and attractors in your readymade baits and homemade dips and soaks as it is very soluble in a wide range of solutions. Bearing in mind that this is simply one example and all you need to do is think a little to produce baits that your fish will not be very familiar with, all it takes is a little imagination to come up with spicy shrimp pellets and meat baits and boosted hemp, nuts, pulses, crushed seeds and so on – all to great effect I might add!

Obviously making baits using highly soluble additives and ingredients is very stimulating to me because they are very stimulating to fish – and are they are usually easily digested too which in cooler water is especially important of course to maximise the potential of baits for even more bites and fish caught. To make a very simple soft paste recipe you have endless options so this is just one suggestion of a concentrated bait. All you do is mix your Belachan block with boiling water to make a dense slurry and mix this with the milk powder called Vitamealo. It will take quite a volume of Vitamealo to form a stiff paste but believe me it is well worth making and using! Put this paste into a glass of cold water and watch what happens.

This paste is very soluble although less so in colder water but is absolutely ideal for cold spring conditions. If you wish to make your paste more resilient again many options are available. You might mix your Vitamealo with whole egg powder, blood powder, caseins, maize meal, tiger nut flour, semolina, or CLO for example. Stiffened paste with a reasonable level of more insoluble ingredients with egg powder for instance makes effective boilies too although steaming baits instead of boiling them is preferable to maximise their nutritional attraction – intact! Now you know how to impregnate your readymade baits with shrimp and how to make a homemade shrimp boilie why not go for it and find out more?! Revealed in my unique readymade bait and homemade bait carp and catfish bait secrets ebooks is far more powerful information – see my biography right now!
