The Very Basics Of Carp Fishing

It is possible for both amateurs and seasoned fishermen to enjoy carp fishing with only the vary basics of tackle, bait and of course plenty of patience. The first thing you will need to know though, is where to find the fish.

The great thing about carp is that they prefer slow moving or still water. This is great news for your blood pressure, as the environment in which you’ll be fishing is likely to be very calm and tranquil. Even if you don’t catch anything, it’s a lovely way to spend a few hours. Many enthusiasts have found so great a pleasure in this pastime, that there is a niche market in carp fishing holidays which will cater for the professional or novice’s every need.

As an all-round sociable species, carp are usually found in groups of six or more. A quiet and shady place with lots of plant life around is the type of environment preferred by carp. Being bed feeders, they are usually not easy to see from the surface. You will, however, be able to tell if they are indeed there.

There are many seasoned fishermen who have been seeking out the best spots for decades, such as George Barnes. “They love the dark and the quiet,” he says. “If disturbed from their habitat, they may disappear and not return to the bed for days. They are easily scared, and a spot where four or five were landed on one day may be barren the next.”

Whilst a fifty-odd pound specimen has been recorded from time to time, it is not likely that your average carp fisherman would ever be that lucky. The average carp landing tends to be around the three to five pound mark, meaning a huge degree of sophistication in carp fishing tackle is unnecessary, particularly for the novice. In the beginning, a simple 10lb-line rod and reel set-up is more than sufficient. A good float is a vital part of your carp fishing tackle. Buy the best one you can afford, because this will help you no end. It doesn’t take much for the carp to be frightened away, so you should avoid excessive pulling in and re-casting.

As carp are omnivorous and will try almost anything which comes their way, there is a huge range of carp fishing bait on the market. “I usually use a ground bait, lowered gently into the water,” says Barnes. “Boilies or pellets or lobworm paste all work well. Once the fish are used to the introduction of these, they will be more inclined to take them from the hook”.

“You must have patience for carp fishing. One day, you may have no luck with one type of bait, so it is essential to have as many different types of carp fishing bait in your bag as you can. Fruit flavour boilies or pellets can sometimes bring instant catches: on other days, you have to keep changing the variety of carp fishing baits before you get results.”

There are certain things to remember to pack in your bag, along with a flask of tea and some sarnies. Depending on the time of year, you may need to bring a variety of hooks. This is where an extra rod can help. Sometimes it’s best just to go with the simplest set-up rather than load up your best hook with the fanciest boilie bait or lug paste.

There are many people, like George, who have been carp fishing for many years – even decades – who will attest to the fact that no matter how much carp fishing tackle you accumulate or bait you try out, it really just depends on what the fish feel like doing. In conclusion then, the most important thing to remember when going carp fishing is to take along your patience!

I have recently been thinking about where to go on holiday this year. Not wanting to travel abroad, as I have traveled a few times on business lately, I focused on the UK. Fly Fishing for Dummies

Clueless about fly fishing?

Me too!

I have been really curious about this sport for some time now. I’ve seen it done countless of times.

Tried it. Failed.

People have endlessly and tirelessly, with their utmost patience and understanding tried to rub off some fly fishing skills on me – but to no avail.

I have resorted to reading, for now. I decided that whatever I can’t do, I might as well LEARN – even just in theory. It helps. I think of my self right now as “A work in progress”.

Let’s all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!

A brief definition about some terms I need to know about fly fishing.

What is Fly Fishing?

Fly fishing is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of salt water species.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

Angler. (Does that have anything to do with Math? I hate Math!)

That would be YOU silly! Someday, IF you learn how to fly fish, you will be called an angler. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, this includes people keeping the catch or people that practice the “Catch and Release” method (highly recommended).

The Essentials – If you don’t have a complete list of these, you’re NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly Fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently from man-made materials. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no butt (handle) extending below the fishing reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used for the deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and are attached to the base or handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important—lines with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter in deciding what line to use is its strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before snapping. One must balance the trade-off between strength and visibility.

Flies as Bait? Are you kidding?

Flies or Artificial flies are constructed — “tied” onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials — in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scuds, eggs, streamers, steelheads, bass flies, salmon flies, and saltwater flies.

You will be considered a well equipped fly fisher if you bring waders, wading boots, vest net, polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat for the harsh sun, sun block and bug dope (bug repellant) – if you don’t want to be eaten alive by bugs before you even catch a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I went about to experience Fly Fishing without even going near a body of water.

Wondering how?

Fishing Tips – How To Become An Expert Fisher

Looking for the target fish first is needed before attempting to catch fishes. Keep in mind that fishes stays at the water where there is enough cover, oxygen and food. Be certain to stay at a close distance to this area and you can certainly catch fish there, only you have to pay patience in finding them.

Fishes living there ranges in wide variety. That is why, they do not live in same areas in the water. Different fishes adapt to different conditions of environment. Different fishes can tolerate different salt levels, oxygen amount, food amounts and types, temperature of the water and areas for hiding. Salt is the element that distinguishes most of the fish. Fish used the element of salt to survive. However, there are fishes that cannot survive in areas with lots of salt but there are also fish species that can live in both fresh water and salt water.

Compared to ocean, rivers, reservoirs and freshwater ponds have lesser salt. Majority of the water in North America are bodies of freshwater. In this kind of water, fishes are mostly carp, crappie, bass, catfish and bluegrip. However, many fish species live in the salty water portion of the ocean. This can be attributed to their kidneys. Because of the kidneys of the fish, they are provided with the ability to retain an appropriate balance of salt in their body. Flounder, sea trout, cod and bluefish are some of the more common fishes that can be found in saltwater.

Oxygen is another factor for looking at a perfect spot for fishing. The level of oxygen is important for the fishes to survive. There are some fish that can survive in less oxygen. This is exemplified by the carp species, unlike the trout, which needs sufficient level of oxygen. The presence of living plants in the stream or lake has a significant effect on the oxygen level in the water. These plants increase the oxygen of the water by the process of photosynthesis. This is a process that makes food by the use of sunlight. Oxygen also goes to the water from the air above the water surface.

Specific fish species are found in water depending on food types available in the area. Different areas provide various food types and amount. Since all the fish must eat, there is a big competition among the fishes. And this issue is another important factor that distinguish which species of fish are present in certain area in the water.

Water temperature is another factor. Different fishes tolerate different temperature of water. There are fishes, which are flexible. They are able to live in different ranges in temperature. On the other hand, there are also fishes that need either warm or cold water to live. This can be exemplified with the trout. Trout can only live in cold water. To easily find the certain type of fish, one tip is to know and learn the different water temperature preferences of different fish species. Through this, one will not get difficulty locating the preferred fish types.

As human, we have the ability to control one of the factors when talking about where the fishes live. This is the water quality which is the most common determinants of the specific place to find the fishes. We have the ability to retain high water quality level. Just keep in mind that sufficient oxygen level is very important to let the fish survive. Clean and pollution-free water is another very important factor, but this is actually not enough. There are still some fish species that do not just need clean water. Carp for one can live in not-so-very-clean water. Therefore cleanliness is not enough, high quality of water is the most important factor for the fishes to survive.

Knowing the specific places where to find the target fishes is important for successful fishing. There are several factors that affect the place where fishes most often stay. These are salt level, oxygen level and water temperature. Fishes are all different and have different needs too. That is why, knowing about these different factors to find the area in the water where they live is important for anglers like you.
