Fishing Clothing Review: TFG Eskimo Second Skin Trousers And Top

Edit Article |

Posted: Nov 11, 2010 |

It’s November as I sit here writing this and I’ve just got back from a quick fishing session in the first real chill of the winter. Crikey, it was cold when I got up!

As I slipped on my thermal fishing gear, it dawned on me that I’d owned the TF Gear Eskimo Second Skin trousers and top for quite some time, and I vowed to dig out my original review of them when I got home.

The piece below was written in January 2008 about some thermal clothing that I first got my hands on in 2007. It’s 2010 now, so I’ve had these items for nearly four years. As an ‘outdoor’ type person, my outdoor gear gets worn a lot. The fact that they have lasted so long is a real testament to the quality of them.

Here’s the original review (January, 2008):
*****
DON’T WORRY – I’m not about to subject you to the sight of a tubby bloke in skin tight leggings. This is a family fishing website and I don’t want to be responsible for mass-vomiting on keyboards. I’ll stick with a catalogue shot and let your imagination do the rest!

I’ve mentioned in previous reviews that I often use items designed for anglers in other areas of my life. I’ve also mentioned before that I own a dog. Therefore, I’ll bore you all again by saying that I’m a dog-owning angler who uses some of his fishing gear for other purposes….and that the Eskimo Second Skin Trousers from the Matt Hayes Total Fishing Gear (TFG) range are one of those items!

These black thermal under-trousers cling to the skin, keeping a very small warm layer of air close to the skin. In a way, they look and work a little bit like a wetsuit, but without the water! They’re also made of a lot more comfortable material and are easy to get on and off! I’ll post the technical details below this review, as posting them here would make it look like I’d performed loads of scientific tests and research, which I haven’t done. Instead, I’ve worn these trousers a LOT and am speaking from my own experience.

As soon as you put the TFG Eskimo Second Skin Trousers on, you feel warm. You look a bit like a wannabe Ninja, but this is soon resolved by putting your normal trousers on over the top. Once that’s done, you can forget about them.

I’ve worn these trousers in extremely cold conditions for over a year now and have never felt that my legs are cold in them. They do exactly what they’re supposed to do and have survived numerous trips to the washing machine.

When overnight carp fishing, they are great to wear in your sleeping bag. Coupled with the TFG Eskimo Second Skin top, they’re a perfect combination at night. I have to say that, although I own a top and use it on occasion (especially at night), I haven’t needed it so much during the day, as most of my windproof fleeces and other tops provide adequate warmth. It’s hand to have at hand, though, as it really does provide instant warmth.

Both the Eskimo trousers and top take up very little room. They’re almost like underwear in design, so are well worth having tucked away in your rucksack if you’re doing a long session. If you’re a day angler, I’d certainly recommend the trousers. The top would be handy if you prefer mobility – you won’t need to wear the number of layers that I usually wear when fishing!

I’ve worn the TFG Eskimo Second Skin trousers and top not just when out carp fishing and when walking the dog, but also when fishing from beaches and out on a boat. Trust me, those conditions can be a lot more demanding than when fishing inshore and these products have never let me down.

The RRP of both the top and trousers is £24.95. However, at the time of writing, TackleBargains have them at just £12.24 each.

Elton Murphy, AnglersNet.co.uk – January, 2008

*****

I’ve just checked and, nearly four years on, you can still get these at the prices quoted above, along with a lot of other quality thermal stuff. Try this link to see a lot of thermal fishing clothing in the UK:

http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/prices/thermals

Even if you are reading this outside the UK and can’t afford to get stuff shipped to your home country from the UK, I’d advise you to find something similar locally. Being warm when fishing makes you a happier angler, and a happy angler is usually a better angler!

Tight lines,

Elton

Fishing – A Beginners Glossary Part 1

Edit Article |

The basic concept of fishing is fairly basic and self explanatory. Fishing is the act of catching fish. Or my particular favourite dictionary definition for fishing is, “the diversion of catching fish!”  I am not sure whether they mean a diversion for the angler from their regular day to day life or the act of diverting the fish onto the hook or into a net!

As with any transaction there are usually two parties involved. In this case we have the fisherman or fisherwoman as the “fish-er” and the fish, would logically, to me at least, be the “fish-ee”.

What about some of the terms we hear regarding fishing though? To the uninitiated it can sound like a load of old trout!

Ok here is a really easy one to kick off with:

1. Fish type/species followed by the word “fishing”- For example, carp, bass or trout and the word fishing, e.g. carp fishing. This really is as simple as it sounds. Fishing for a particular species of fish which in this case is carp.

2. Fishing Tackle – This is not some illegal challenge in football or soccer but in fact the equipment that is used for fishing. There is a large variety of fishing tackle available and much of it can be specialised, e.g. carp fishing tackle. Yes you guessed it, the fishing tackle used to try and catch carp.

3. Coarse Fishing – This is not fishing on a golf course (notice the subtle spelling difference) or any kind of course for that matter. It is in fact the name given to fishing (usually in the United Kingdom) for freshwater fish that are not considered game fish which are trout, salmon and char. Once again, carp is a common target for coarse fishers.

4. Fly Fishing – Fishing whilst flying would be really difficult and probably very dangerous, so that’s not what this is. Fly fishing is actually fishing with a very special kind of bait, an artificial fly. Yes a fake fly! The fishers use all kinds of fake fly, different sizes, different colours and the aim is to lure the fish with this unique bait.

5. Fishing Bait – Theoretically you could fish without much of the modern fishing tackle as I am sure they did in ages past, with just a sharp spear and an even sharper aim! However, whoever first came up with the idea of luring the fish with some kind of bait was clearly a genius. Fishing is now much easier than it ever was, with all kinds of bait available for all kinds of different fish and different fishing conditions.

This concludes part one of our “Beginners Fishing Glossary”. Tune in soon for part 2, when we will have a look at Sea Fishing, Bass Fishing and perhaps even the legend that is J R Hartley.

How To Go Carp Fishing At Night

Edit Article |

Posted: Nov 15, 2010 |

If you’ve never done it before, carp fishing at night can seem a daunting prospect, but given a little thought and planning to ensure you take all the right tackle, it can be an exciting new way to enjoy your fishing and spend even longer on the bank, and in this piece we’ll take a look at some of the tackle you will need.

Firstly, it’s important to differentiate between the occasional angler who might only intend on fishing one or two nights a year, and the angler who wants to be night fishing every weekend. If you’re really looking to get into it, then long term it will pay to invest in items that will last you a long time and are purpose designed to do the job in hand, whereas, if it’s just for the odd occasion, it’s pointless spending big money on something that’s going to spend most of its life tucked away at the back of the garage.

First things first, you need shelter from the elements. This is where a bivvy comes in, a purpose-made fishing tent designed to take you, a bed chair (which we’ll come onto next) and all your tackle, food, and accessories. There are hundreds of different types out there from £50.00 to £500.00, and you’ll find small ones, big ones, and some that would house a car! The small ones are designed for anglers fishing one night at a time (as you don’t need to have much stuff with you). The medium sized ones are for anglers who tend to fish for a couple of days/nights at a time, and the biggest are designed for long stay sessions, for example a holiday abroad where two people might stay in one bivvy for two weeks. To a degree, you get what you pay for, so it helps to do a bit of research into the type that would suit you best, but again, it might be a good idea to get a cheaper one at first – you never know, you might be afraid of the dark!

If you want to learn all about carp fishing bivvies, take a look at http://www.bivvies.co.uk/

Next, you’ll need a bed chair. These are a more robust type of camp bed which can pack up really neatly and take less than a minute to erect. They have independently adjustable legs so that they can be set up on uneven surfaces. There are various types out there, the main difference being the amount of legs they have. A slimmer build angler will be suited to a four leg chair, whilst the fuller figure might be better off with a six leg chair which offers a bit more strength and rigidity.

Next, you’ll need a decent sleeping bag. For the serious angler there are bags available which cater for all seasons; you start with a heavyweight bag suitable for winter use, which you can then strip parts off as the nights get warmer in the summer. Again, these can cost a bit, so a quick fix is to get a normal summer sleeping bag and put a cheap camping sleeping bag off eBay or from a military surplus store, which you can stuff inside the other bag to get extra thermal layers.

You’ll also need some light for the job. My personal view is the less you have, the more you’ll catch. If your swim looks like Blackpool illuminations after dark, the carp will quickly give your area of the lake a wide birth, and similarly, it might not go down too well with other anglers fishing the lake. You might want to get a small bivvy or table lamp for reading, making rigs or cooking, but many, like me, who just fish quick overnighters, just have a small torch, either hand held or a head torch.

Aside from all the usual carp gear, that’s pretty much it. Of course you’ll need cooking gear if you’re there for a while, or a plentiful supply of food which does not need cooking. The simple rule is that the more gear you decide to take for a night session, the bigger job it is to get it all round to the swim! So whilst a five course evening meal with cheeseboard may sound a good idea in the comfort of your own home, once on the bankside it’s a different matter, as you need to think about all the pots and pans, stoves and utensils you need to cook it with. Again, you can get some excellent mess and KFS (knife, fork, and spoon) sets from army surpass stores that will have all the bits you need.

Last, but by no means least, is clothing. Always take a little more clothing than you think you’ll need. It may be a hot summer’s day when you leave the house at dinnertime, but come nightfall the temperature will soon drop away and you might well need a decent hoody or coat, and in winter you’ll need a good set of thermals. For safety’s sake, I also keep a fresh set of cloths in the car should I need them. You never know when you’re going to get caught in a shower or, even worse, fall head over heels into the water, and the worst thing imaginable is having to sit there wet in the freezing cold – I’ve done it once – never again!

Finally, give some thought to what your swim will be like after dark. When you come steaming out of your bivvy to hit a run in the middle of the night, it might not be as easy to see the uneven ground just before your rods, or the big hole next to the edge of the swim. Likewise, make sure you put all essential tackle like landing nets and mats where they’re not going to be in the way, but be close enough at hand once you are at the waters edge playing the fish. It goes without saying that safety should always come first, so before it goes dark have a look around your swim to make yourself aware of any potential issues that you need to be aware of after dark.

It’s a good idea to do your first night session with another angler who has experience of fishing at night, as they’ll be in the perfect position to offer help and advice as your session unfolds. Night fishing is a great way of spending more time on the bank, and thus increasing the chances of landing the fish of your dreams, so what are you waiting for? Give it a try.

There are various fishing venues in France where you can spend carp fishing holidays with your family and friends. One such venue in France, with accommodation, is Etang de Planchon. No matter whether you are a pro angler or just a novice, your carp fishing holidays at Etang de Planchon are going to be full of fun and excitement for sure. The panoramic 4 acre carp fishing lake is a secure and secluded venue and caters for a maximum of five anglers per week. Staying at a carp fishing venue with accommodation in France such as Etang de Planchon would be one of the best choices and will leave you with an experience to cherish for a lifetime. I have recently been thinking about where to go on holiday this year. Not wanting to travel abroad, as I have traveled a few times on business lately, I focused on the UK.
