What You Need to Know about Koi
The term “koi” actually means “carp” in Japanese. They are domesticated common carps. Koi breeding started in Japan in the 1820’s. To date, koi breeding is very popular and an extremely lucrative business. Koi fish now come in various color patterns and combinations that can involve black, red, orange, yellow, silver and green.
Backyard koi ponds, with the wonderful sound of running and cascading water, can provide relaxation to the mind and soul. They give owners their desired peaceful and tranquil environment. These ponds can be amazing sights especially when koi owners introduce living plants to the koi ponds, replicating in the process a real pond environment.
In a few instances, though, these koi fish and plants cannot seem to co-exist. Koi fish could at times be very difficult to manage especially when mixed with plants. Owners often try to place these potted plants on the pond floor and allow them to sit there. Larger koi can sometimes knock off these potted plants and create real problems to the owners.
Koi can also have the tendency of “digging” up the soil. But, that does not mean you cannot have any plants in your pond at all. Koi pond owners can be really creative in finding solutions to these problems. You can wrap netting over the tops of the pots to keep the koi from digging in them.
Pea gravel placed on top of your plants can also solve the problem. Larger and bigger pots can take the weight of river stones. With the stones on top of the pots, the koi fish will have a harder time knocking them over due to their weight and they will not be able to get to the dirt underneath the stones in order to dig it up.
Water lilies can provide a great look to your koi pond. They come in several different varieties including ones that grow well in shallow water and ones that grow better in deeper water. They really provide your koi with shade and shelter even if they are not oxygenating plants. Plus, having plants in the water will attract insects. Koi fish are omnivores and will search the plants’ foliage to seek out insects and larva to munch on.
Other than the insects that the koi fish search out from the plants, they can also be looking for some other types of food. It is not unusual for koi fish owners to mention that they successfully trained their fish to eat out of their hands. Koi fish have the ability to be able to recognize the person who feeds them and will approach that person during feeding time. Watermelons, lettuce and peas are favorite foods of the koi fish, other than the usual pre-made koi food.
It is really an amazing experience to watch your koi fish in various colors swim with grace in your backyard pond. They give their owners so much pleasure and in return, these owners reward the koi with unrestricted generosity and care.

Fishing Bedchairs – Why You Need A Good One!
When I first got serious about carp fishing and had spent a couple of long night sessions cursing my camping chair, I invested in a cheap bedchair, forking out around sixty quid. The first time I used it, it was bliss compared to the chair, and I was well pleased. Trouble is, it lasted all of three trips before it started falling apart. One of the frame joints started loosening and a couple of hinges got a bit floppy. Finally I managed to bend the frame out of shape on a particularly uneven bank. Result: dead bedchair.
But by then of course I knew I wanted another bedchair – there was no way I was going back to sitting upright in a camping chair. A mate raved about his Nash bedchair, so I did a bit of research on the carp forums and ended up going with a Nash Indulgence. I spent a bit extra (already learnt my lesson the hard way) and got the X-Strength Wideboy – you can guess what that added to the normal Indulgence model.
That was a year ago, and I have never looked back. In fact, it’s such a relief every time I lie down on it I would have paid twice the money for it. Not only is it comfortable, it has removable covers for easy cleaning, the frame is indestructible and all the joints and hinges are still in perfect condition. Nash knows their stuff, so if you want a bedchair that’s going to last, and let you sigh with relief when you lie down, rather than curse, look no further than a Nash bedchair.
JRC bedchairs also have a great reputation for comfort and durability. Whereas Nash bedchairs have a four leg system, JRC bedchairs have three. This is a common feature of the cheaper bedchairs on the market, but in the case of JRC bedchairs, it’s more to do with weight. The first time I tried a JRC, I was skeptical, but I have to admit, those three legs do a good job on their own. I’m a big bloke and I feel safer and more sturdy with a four leg bedchair, but the JRC definitely has a weight advantage over a Nash. The extra leg increases weight by a kilogram or thereabouts, so this is something to consider.
In conclusion, I can’t recommend Nash bedchairs enough – well worth what you pay for them. JRC bedchairs are also excellent. Just don’t buy a cheap one – it ain’t worth the bother!

Carp Fishing Equipment the basics you need to get started
Preparation is key when you are looking to take up carp fishing. The price of the equipment will vary depending on the carp fishing rods, carp reels and accessories that you want to purchase. You can pick up a basic set for around £50-£60 or you can go more upmarket and spend hundreds if not thousands. For someone just starting out it is advisable to study as many reviews and fishing magazines to guage what carp fishing gear is out there. Again you’ll want to think about the waters that you’re going to be fishing before making any purchases.
Where you decide that you are going to fish is one of the factors that you need to think about before you purchase any carp fishing equipment. If you are looking to fish thickly weeded areas where you might have to bully a fish to land it then you need to take a look at a heavier sort of tackle. If however you are fishing a gravel pit or a large lake free of weed then you can get away with lighter tackle as you can give the fish a lot more slack.
Another great idea is to visit the waters and talk to the anglers that already fish there, by doing this you will probably get a good idea of the kind of tackle that is used. These people will have no financial interest in the carp fishing equipment for sale in the tackle shops which means you ought to be able to get an unbiased review on what is required for each fishery.
When you have decided what type of tackle you are looking for then it is time to visit the tackle shops. You should physically visit the tackle shops so you can get an actual feel of different rods and reels. Once you have got a feel for the rod and reel hold off from making a purchase and begin to shop around. You will almost certainly manage to get a better deal on the internet and as you will have physically handled the products you are not buying blind.
In addition to a rod and reel there are two other items that you will need to purchase. One of them is a landing net which needs to be at least 42″. You also need to ensure that it has a fine mesh so that the carp’s fins cannot get caught. You also must have an unhooking mat as this is a requirement on every fishery which you visit.
What you must not do when buying your carp fishing equipment is try to do things on the cheap. There may be a lot of temptation to buy a basic kit when you are first starting out, but could wind up cursing your luck when that 30 pounder gets away due to your inferior equipment.

Carp fishing rods the three types you need to be aware of
The choice of rod is very important when you are going after that elusive specimen carp. There are so many different makes of carp fishing rods and carp reels on the market every one for a specific type of fishing. There are three main types of rod to consider every one of them dependant on where you are going to fish.
You will often see when looking to select a rod a mention of a rod’s test curve. A test curve is determine by how much weight it takes to bend the rod through 90 degrees. The most common test curve is 2.5 lb which is normal for close to medium range fishing. If you are looking to fish long distances then a 3lb test curve would probably be more suitable.
The three main styles are as follows.
All through action
These bend through the whole length of the rod. You will often feel the rod bending under the handle. This type of rod is for playing fish with the best safety margin rather than a casting tool. These rods usually feel nicer and are a pleasure to use.
Medium action
The bend on these rods starts about two thirds the way down the rod. This offers a pleasant bend on the rod whilst there’s still power left in the butt to control a good fish. These rods certainly give a greater safety margin when playing a fish but at the expense of some casting distance. This kind of action is the one that I recommend and frequently use myself
Fast tip action
These will usually feel extremely stiff as they bend only in the tip section with other joints remaining rigid. These rods are intended for fast pick-up and long casting. The disadvantage is that every movement of a fish tends to get transmitted right down to the hand. There is also no cushion if the fish makes a sudden run as it is being netted. This can result in the line breaking or the hook being pulled out.
Most rods are made from hollow tapering tubes from a mixture of carbon and glass fibres bonded by a resin. The more carbon present in the mixture, the more expensive the rod. It will also make the rod stiffer and allow manufacturers to reduce the diameter of the tube. Most cheaper rods are manufactured from a mix containing a larger proportion of glass fibres. These rods are often referred to as composites. These are cheaper, less stiff, more robust and of larger diameter and by being less stiff and more robustthey make good carp fishing rods for the beginner.
